IBioIC is committed to supporting diversity as we believe that true innovation and economic growth can only come from a multiplicity of disciplines, experiences and opinions.
There is currently a need in the industrial workforce for highly skilled and versatile employees with a lack of cross-fertilisation between disciplines impeding the drive to innovation.
We believe that the ground-breaking approach to recruitment and support of under-represented groups proposed by this CDT will help to address that shortage by training future leaders that have both the depth and breadth of knowledge to change the way we solve problems and enact change.
Organisation profile
IBioIC was established in 2014 to stimulate growth of the Industrial Biotechnology sector in Scotland by leveraging the knowledge and expertise in Scottish academic institutes.
IBioIC is a European centre of excellence connecting global industry with outstanding academic expertise and government to bring new processes and products to the international market.
IBioIC plays an influential role in generating innovative and more sustainable solutions across a wider range of sectors including Food; Pharmaceuticals; Materials and Textiles; Agrochemicals.
Embedded within Scotland’s Innovation Infrastructure, IBioIC:
accelerates innovation by continuing to support HEIs to identify and validate innovations, de-risk their commercialisation, and facilitate scale-up of opportunities through our specialist equipment facilities;
delivers innovative new training formats that build, and continually replenish, the pipeline of talent to support the demand for highly skilled workers, and to create a nation of entrepreneurs.
IBiolC experts will bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the program, including extensive experience of contributing to student training. IBioiC PhD training programs have supported over 130 PhD students since 2014.
Each year, IBioIC provides a range of training covering technical, economic, leadership and personal development courses, which are constantly reviewed with input from students, academics and industry, and with formal input from our industry-led skills advisory board.
Through our extensive network of highly engaged industrial members, we will help to enhance the impact of the centre and support the career development of the postgraduate students trained. Specifically, IBiolC will support this CDT by:
contributing to the training of the postgraduate students by delivering a series workshops for each of the five cohorts. This will include ‘Working with Industry’, ‘Marketing Yourself’, ‘Entrepreneurial Skills Development’ and ‘Design of Experiment’;
inviting the students to industry engagement days and careers events to facilitate their exposure to our partner companies throughout their academic journey;
providing a suitably qualified representative to become a member of the Advisory Board for a period of at least a year to help provide steering and governance for the CDT;
participating in CDT, including e.g. sand-pits, brainstorming sessions, training programs, networking events, and policy discussions.
