Personal profile:

My research focuses on solutions to environmental and climate change and I enjoy interfacing between scientific research and areas like policy. In particular, understanding where the leverage points are to change systems that are no longer working. My research group has a wide range of active projects from reconstructing environmental and climate record to designing solutions for regenerating contaminated land to understanding the impact of climate change on agricultural practices in developing countries.

I would like to collaborate with researchers who are interested in coming together from different disciplines (and different sectors) to address some of the biggest, most complex societal challenges. I currently lead the GALLANT programme (https://www.gla.ac.uk/gallant) which focuses on interdisciplinary research and systems approaches for city-scale transformation. I am open to supervising across a range of topics related to environment, climate and sustainability.

I tend to be laid back as a supervisor, seeing my role as steering and guiding a student’s progress as needed, but allowing the student independence to explore and shape their project along the lines of their evolving interests. My graduated PhD students have gone on to work in number of different areas from ScottishWater as project managers to biotech to digital visualisation and some have stayed within academia and are now Lecturers on tenure tracks.

I have a strong commitment to Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). I have played a number of roles in this area advocating for EDI as a ‘WiSE’ liaison as a graduate student, to being a member of an Athena Self-Assessment team through to successful Bronze and Silver Awards. More generally, as a supervisor advocating for and supporting my students as individuals with a diverse range of needs.

I spend nearly all of my spare time dedicated to my furry friend, Gracie, who is an Australian Shepard and a great, funny companion.
