Mission Priority Areas
The aim of my research is to develop sustainable river mamangement and flood risk reduction solutions that are 1) informed by the needs of communities living in floodplains, and 2) minimise environmental degradation. My research group use field data collection and numerical modelling to better understand the drivers of flood risk in dynamic environments. I am keen to develop more cross-discipline collaborations with social scientists and anthropologists to integrate community goals and knowledge into the research conception and implementation.
I have been doing interdisciplinary research for the last decade. The projects that have been most successful in terms of their impact have engaged engineers, physical and social scientists, and anthropologists. Natural disasters, such as flooding and drought, are becoming an increasing problem. In this world that is facing rapid climate and landuse changes, we require an interdisciplinary lens to develop sustainable and appropriate solutions to tackle these global issues.
Through supervising research students from a range of backgrounds and cultures, many of who have worked on interdisciplinary projects, or whose projects are outside of my field of expertise, I have been able to expand my perspective of what research can look like. I look forward to being involved in more excited research projects with the DiveIn community.
