Why do you want to join the DiveIn community?

Real diversity in science not only creates innovative ideas and solutions but also proves anyone can make a change, independent of background.

This CDT is a very important step towards this goal and gives me the opportunity to contribute to an effective EDI approach.

Personal profile:

Having grown up with a mixed Asian/white working-class background between multiple cultures I have always perceived academia as an elitist ivory tower, rarely meeting peers with similar background. Until my first post-doc, my resources were always limited. Continuing my academic path was a constant personal challenge. Academia is still perceived as elitist and suffers from a lack of EDI. This leaves an incredible potential untapped to not only nurture new ideas but also enable anyone, independent of background, the opportunity to contribute to science, communities, and society while serving as a role model. Academia can and should be at the forefront of EDI.

I have been and continue to be active to achieve this goal:

  • As a post-doc/PhD representative I served as a mentor to peers including the organisation of department-wide events to address mental well-being and EDI issues at my university.
  • At UofG I have been part of the GES Summer School 2023 to help widen participation of students with diverse backgrounds.
  • I have been supervising UKRI IAPETUS2 summer students within the Research Experience Placement scheme to enable students with diverse backgrounds to enter a PhD programme.
  • DiveIn is the next step.
