Collaboration between people with different characteristics, experiences, and backgrounds (both academic and personal) fosters serious scientific progress - exactly what I want to see.
Personal profile:

I’m passionate about figuring out how things work, seeing common patterns across disciplines, and then using this insight to model and predict things that matter. I focus on climate dynamics, climate change impacts, and the development of theory-driven or empirical (statistical and AI-based) methods and tools for research.

I am particularly interested in forming collaborations with people, who want to model and predict climate change impacts – it doesn’t matter if those are impacts on natural systems (e.g., glaciers), agriculture, or people and culture. However, I am always open to new, wild, outside-the-box ideas and welcome new interdisciplinary challenges.

As a supervisor, I put the student before the project. We are human beings first and students, colleagues, academics second. My supervision style can vary to accommodate what works best for the students, but I always keep an eye on their personal growth, professional development, and progress (towards the project’s completion as well as the student’s personal goals).

I don’t regard Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) as a separate initiative or optional enhancement of activities. My long-held values, convictions, personal experiences, and understanding of the benefits of these (E, D, and I) simply motivate me to be inclusive and make time to discover, discuss and take action against inequity. I don’t consider them “EDI activities” – it’s simply how I’ve chosen to live and interact with others and my environment.

On a personal note, I’m also passionate about sustainable and ethical (open-source) software, Fortran, game development, visual art, music production, rail-based transport, and learning about (and from) birds, other animals, and nature.
