Strategic Research Areas (SRAs)
At DiveIn, we focus on tackling the world’s most pressing challenges while driving innovation through transformative technologies.
Our research areas are inherently interdisciplinary, bringing together expertise from diverse fields, to address critical challenges and drive innovation in areas of national and global importance. They are designed to create impact across society, industry, and academia by tackling global needs and enabling cutting-edge solutions.
Our research areas align with strategic objectives set by leading funding bodies, such as the EPSRC, to tackle complex problems. At DiveIn, driving towards solutions for these complex problems guides our research efforts and collaborations, ensuring that our work is impactful, future-focused, and aligned with broader societal goals.
Our strategic research areas are grouped into two interconnected categories: Global Challenges & Enabling Technologies.
Global Challenges
These areas represent some of the most urgent and complex challenges facing society today – issues that demand the full power of science and research to tackle. Addressing them requires innovative, interdisciplinary solutions that break traditional boundaries and draw on expertise from multiple domains. By focusing on planetary health, bridging the digital divide, beyond net zero and transforming health and healthcare, DiveIn aims to create meaningful impact – improving lives, protecting ecosystems, and shaping a sustainable future.
Planetary Health
Planetary HealthThe University of Glasgow recognises that planetary health research must go well beyond reducing greenhouse-gas emissions - it must address the intertwined systems of human health, ecosystem integrity and societal justice.
Bridging the Digital Divide
Bridging the Digital DivideThe University of Glasgow is actively helping to bridge the digital divide by combining research, education, and community engagement to ensure that everyone benefits from digital innovation.
Beyond Net Zero
Beyond Net ZeroGlasgow’s Beyond Net Zero research recognises that science and technology research into reducing carbon emissions alone will not create a just and sustainable future.
Transforming Health and Healthcare
Transforming Health and HealthcareTransforming Health and Healthcare is at the forefront of a transformative field at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and biomedical applications.
Enabling Technologies
Driving progress on today’s most urgent Global Challenges relies on the development of Enabling Technologies. These transformative technologies form the foundation for innovation, enabling breakthroughs that make ambitious solutions possible. Collaboration across fields creates opportunities to advance technologies such as Advanced Connectivity, AI and Big Data, Quantum Technologies, Photonics, and Engineering Biology – ensuring they achieve their full potential and deliver meaningful impact. By investing in these capabilities, we unlock the tools needed to accelerate discovery, power new applications, and shape a more sustainable, connected future.
Photonics
PhotonicsAt the University of Glasgow (UofG), researchers shape the future of light-based technologies. Photonics research ranges from fundamental optical physics to applied device engineering with clear societal impact.
Engineering Biology
Engineering BiologyEngineering Biology brings together synthetic biology and engineering to create novel biological systems that do not exist in nature. At the University of Glasgow, it acts as a powerful enabling technology across major research missions.
Advanced Materials
Advanced MaterialsThe University of Glasgow has a wide-ranging portfolio of research into advanced materials, ranging from biologicals, through soft organics and hybrid materials, all the way to hard inorganics.
AI & Big Data
AI & Big DataGlasgow's AI research is uniquely focused on developing approaches that are human-centred and user-oriented.
Advanced Connectivity Technology
Advanced Connectivity TechnologyThe Advanced Connectivity area at the University of Glasgow is at the forefront of transformative telecommunication technologies.
Quantum Technologies
Quantum TechnologiesThe University of Glasgow is home to the Centre of Quantum Technologies and one of the four Quantum technology Hubs, QuantIC, the Quantum Imaging Centre.
