Organisation profile

Clyde Hydrogen Systems Ltd (CHS) is a new spinout (Feb 2023) from the University of Glasgow’s School of Chemistry.

We are a young company offering a dynamic working environment and the chance to work on developing cutting edge technology for sustainable fuel production, helping to drive this technology from the lab to commercial application.

We can offer placements to CDT students who are interested in working at the interface of chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. We are passionate about increasing diversity across the sustainable fuels sector.

At CHS, we are developing a new type of renewable hydrogen production system based on breakthrough research from one of the world’s leading electrochemical research groups.

Our novel technology is proven at lab scale (TRL4) and has the potential to deliver high pressure renewable hydrogen at scale and at low cost. Renewable (green) hydrogen is produced using electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity from renewable energy sources. Uniquely, unlike all incumbent electrolysis technologies, our Decoupled Electrolysis approach gives the user the unprecedented ability to split water into hydrogen and oxygen in completely separate reactors and at completely separate rates. This simplifies many aspects of electrolysis system design, improves performance by allowing direct connection to wind farms and provides huge opportunities for cost reduction.

Our vision is to create a compelling Scottish renewable hydrogen production system company with global ambitions, technology leadership and the ability to manufacture at scale in Scotland. We want our company to be seen as a flag bearer for Scotland, helping to drive the world’s transition to renewable hydrogen and to be actively supporting the Scottish Government’s aims of achieving 5GW of installed renewable hydrogen production capacity by 2030.
