Mission Priority Areas
My research passion revolves around materials discovery – the thrill of making a new material is something I’ll always enjoy! Our group does a lot of magnetic and energy materials synthesis and use advanced national and international facilities around the UK and Europe to understand them better. We’d be particularly interested to form collaborations with engineering and/or policy groups to explore potential applications of the materials we work on. A potential CDT project could involve, for instance, cross-disciplinary work around the design and deployment of novel heating and cooling devices.
I’m a new supervisor with my first student half-way through their PhD, so still learning what kind of supervisor I am! I like to think I’m quite hands-on but also like to encourage students to take their project where they’d like to.
I strongly believe that improving EDI has all kinds of positive effects within University and academic life. I’m delighted to be able to contribute to the Institute of Physics Project Juno, as well as their Girls into Physics outreach program, and currently I’m taking part in an STFC funded project exploring the impact of STEM activities in youth work (although really I’m just looking for new activities to entertain my own kids 🙂 ). In terms of furthering EDI, the CDT is an excellent idea that I would love to see succeed – I’d be happy to contribute in any way I can to help it do that!
